Goodell Accused Of Lying To Man In Pacman Case

Things have gone from great to bad to worse to, “Hey, what’s that coming down onto my head? I know it’s not raining,” for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in a span of about two weeks. He’s been taken through the wringer on Spygate. And now this: Accusations that he reneged on promises to help Tommy Urbanski, who was paralyzed in the Pacman Jones Las Vegas melee, pay medical bills.

Pacman Jones Tommy Urbanski

Today’s NEW YORK DAILY NEWS has an interview with Urbanski’s wife, Kathy, in which she paints a fairly unflattering picture of the whole situation.

Goodell? Not looking so good.

As her staggering bills mounted and her paralyzed husband lived through hell, the phone call Kathy Urbanski received from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell seemed heaven-sent. Goodell offered to provide Tommy Urbanski with desperately needed money as he recovers from a near-fatal shooting allegedly sparked last February by Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam (Pacman) Jones, his wife said. But Goodell never came through. ‘Roger Goodell told me, ‘You don’t have to call us. We’ll get in touch with you,’ Kathy Urbanski recalled angrily. “Now I realize he meant, ‘Don’t call us, we’ll call you.’

The article also quotes Goodell from before the Super Bowl saying the NFL doesn’t have any responsibility for the Urbanskis’ situation. While there is a good chance this will blow over quietly, it’s also worth noting the NFL isn’t used to PR hits like this. It bears watching as a long-term development.
