Golfer Takes Swing at Ryder Cup, Calls It ‘Slavery’

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Memo to all people everywhere: STOP USING RACIALLY INDICATIVE TERMS TO TALK ABOUT SPORTS.

Hunter Mahan

Golfer Hunter Mahan is latest moron to incite a term that relates to racism for the purpose of describing something in the sports world. THE SPORTING LIFE reads up on Mahan’s recent interview with GOLF MAGAZINE, where among other stupid things, the swinger says that playing for the Ryder Cup is like being “a slave that week.”

Fortunately, not all of Mahan’s outspoken and ridiculous comments invoked racial thoughts. Some were just intended to cheese off the Ryder Cup and PGA people.

He said: “From what I’ve heard the whole week is extremely long. You’ve got dinners every night - not little dinners, but huge, massive dinners. I know, as players, that’s the last thing we want to do. We want to prepare ourselves. That’s part of the whole thing: you’re just a slave that week.

“At some point the players might say, ‘You know what - we’re not doing this anymore, because this is ridiculous’.

“Don’t be surprised if it (a refusal to play) happens. It’s just not a fun week like it should be.

“The Presidents Cup is fun. Jack (Nicklaus) just makes it fun. We had a great time, we really enjoyed each other’s company.

“From what I’ve heard, the Ryder Cup just isn’t fun. The fun is sucked right out of it. That’s the word I hear a lot.”

Dude. Hunter. Allow me to teach you something really quick that will make the rest of your life a lot freaking easier. Being forced to play professional golf in any scenario — even for free — is not equivalent to being a slave. Ever.

It’s fine if you hate the Ryder Cup and have a strong opinion about getting paid to appear & represent your country. That’s cool. I get that. Opinions are awesome. But you can’t use the word “slave”, even if you aren’t racist - no more than Kelly Tilghman can use the word “lynching” or a Golf Magazine can put a noose on their cover.

Kelly Tilghman

Mahan — currently 12th overall in the American RC standings — also went on to describe the beauty of Europe’s RC system, blah blah blah. But he was likely an add-on, not a automatic berth on the Cup’s team. If anything, he’s probably “crushed” (read: happily ended) his chances of appearing. Thanks, Hunter. Glad you care for America.

Oh, and while you’re here, go on - apologize.
