WTF: Auburn Fires Tuberville, Petrino Contacted?

Not exactly a shocker, but the BIRMINGHAM NEWS reports this afternoon that Tommy Tuberville is out as Auburn coach.

Bobby Petrino Tommy Tuberville

No other details are forthcoming, except that the announcement could come today.

The News also reports on possible replacements, which somehow, SOME WAY include Bobby Petrino.

An unofficial Auburn representative has reached out to people close to Arkansas’ Bobby Petrino and Texas Tech’s Mike Leach to gauge their interest in succeeding Tommy Tuberville if the school decides to fire him, a source familiar with the contacts told The Birmingham News.

In case you don’t remember, when Petrino was at Louisville, he met in secret with Auburn officials about the head coaching job, which was then held by Tuberville. When confronted by the media about the meeting with AU, Petrino initially lied, denying any contact.

His a$$ was then nailed to the floorboards by the LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL, who confronted Petrino about the discussions. The coach eventually admitted the contact, and chalked it up to inexperience (yeahright).

And now Auburn is going back to the well again? Well, at least that’s what the News is reporting. But a move by Petrino from Arkansas to Auburn would be highly unlikely since, “Petrino’s Arkansas contract has a $2.85-million buyout and a non-compete clause that is supposed to prohibit him from leaving Arkansas for another SEC West school.

Knowing the folks at Auburn though, that might not be an insurmountable hurdle.

As noted above, Mike Leach of Texas Tech is apparently also in the running for the Auburn job. Much like the Washington gig.  And whatever other vacancy you can swing a dead cat at.

But who's going to coach Auburn in their bowl game?

    Oh, wait.

They should have waited this dry spell out.  I'm sure Bama will be back on probation in a couple of seasons and Auburn can swoop right back into contention.

Auburn wants Mike Leach - from what I'm hearing that's who they'll get.  Official word out of Auburn is that he resigned, not fired.

This is why college football is a joke.  Free agent coaches, no playoff, no legitimate way to find the National Champion.  This is why I turn off college football once the regular season is over.  It's a sham, a joke, and a fraud, and Bobby Petrino is a piece of crap.
