Glen Davis is one huge, huge dude. The former LSU star is 6′9″ and a svelte 290 pounds, moves like a ballerina, and can bench press the Southern Hemisphere. But it looks like his “Big Baby” nickname isn’t just a reference to his youthful visage, as Kevin Garnett caused the big man to break down in tears at the end of the bench during last night’s 93-78 victory over Portland.

Garnett had plenty of reason to be angry with Big Baby and the rest of the backups; Boston led by 25 near the beginning of the fourth quarter when Doc Rivers started emptying the bench, but Portland quickly cut into that lead, bringing the starters back with six minutes to play and the lead halved. Ever made a starter come back into a game he had mentally checked out of? Doesn’t make him very happy. Observe, after the jump:
It’s hard to call a second-round pick a “bust”; most of them spend no more than a couple years in the league before they’re cut in favor of another second-rounder who probably won’t do anything. Still, for someone to be so physically imposing yet ineffective is a disappointment, to say the least. Davis averages under 4 points a game and has converted only about a third of his field goals, which is wildly unacceptable for an inside player. Oh, and his defense is, shall we say, “uninspired”; he averages about 8.4 fouls per 48 minutes. I guess what I mean is he sucks.
Of course, Boston is 19-2 and has won 11 straight, so it’s not as if Davis’ lousy play has been much of a deterrent to success for the defending champions. Still, as the season drags on and Rivers starts giving his aging stars’ knees some more bench time in preparation for the playoffs, Davis’s going to need to start doing something more than biffing 8-foot jumpers and reaching at guys blowing past him.
Oh, and ditch that “Big Baby” nickname. For real. Beat the living bejeezus out of the next person that calls you that and start using your giant frame for evil instead of mediocrity. It’s that or you’re off playing in Europe with all the other guys who couldn’t cut it in the League.
