Let’s play the old Sesame Street game “Which one of these things is not like the other?”: Angelina Jolie, Sarah Palin, Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Gina Carano. If you guessed Carano, congratulations! You just picked out the least likely member of the “Top 5 most influential women” in, well, just about ever.

Carano, easily the best looking fighter ever, catapulted from complete anonymity into the Top 10 of YAHOO! BUZZ’s annual list of most influential women. In fact, she not only made the list, she made the top 5. Sure, Carano got plenty of eyeballs on her as “Crush” on “American Gladiators”, and also probably in part of being one half of the first-ever primetime female fight. Still, we’re betting that her looks have something to do with it, no?

Just how popular has Carano become? Well, when her bout against Kaitlin Young back in May was announced, she got search hits that were 19 times higher than Chuck Liddell did after his primetime MMA title fight. Yes, 19 times. She got more hits than Paris Hilton that week, and 25 times more than former Presidential hopeful John Edwards - despite the fact that Edwards endorsed Barack Obama, all while rumors over a supposed love child with a former political contractor swirled. And that was before the fight even happened.

Not surprisingly, nearly 90 percent of her searches are men, which just goes to show that stalking is significantly easier in a virtual world. Admit it, you’ve searched for her. You know you have.

Then there’s Ms. Carano’s most recent weekend social events. You know, these events, which led to plenty of questions about whether or not she “swings for the other team.” But that’s the thing about being a female fighter: allure about “swinging for the other team” just makes you more intriguing! It really does. Two female fighters, potentially both lesbian (we know Tonya Evinger, the blond partying with her below, is), wrestling with each other at a party? You’re trying to tell us that’s not the closest thing to porn in clothes that’s ever evolved naturally? It has to be.

Oh yeah, and she had to get naked in front of a crowd before her biggest bout. How much would you have paid to be one of these towel holders? Maybe she did deserve to be one of the year’s most influential women. After all, public nudity is one of the main factors in our calibration.

Now, if only we could do what the HOUSTON CHRONICLE’s BRAWL SPORTS blog suggested and create a Top 10 Influential Women tournament. They could choose the sport of choice, so long as Carano and Lara Croft, err, Jolie made it to the final.
