This just in from headquarters: Agent Zero is looking for a new assignment, as Gilbert Arenas has opted out of his contract.
Ivan Carter of the WASHINGTON POST reports that the Wizards star had filled out the necessary paperwork with the NBA office last Friday. So, as of right now, just call Arenas “Unrestricted Free Agent Zero.”
But that doesn’t mean Gilbert is definitely vaulting from the Verizon Center.
Arenas is giving up $12.8 million in salary next season in order to go for the big bucks - like, say, a new six-year deal that could be worth almost $120 million. However, he’s willing to forgo a million here or there if it help keeps fellow free agent Antwan Jamison in D.C.
The Wizards say they plan on re-signing both Arenas & Jamison. But come July 1st, the 29 other franchises can start gabbing with Gilbert. However, they’ll still have to wait a few days more, as Arenas plans on taking a trip to Asia & Europe.
So, what does Gilbert have to say about this over on his blog?
Nothing. In fact, he hasn’t written anything since May 7, when he denied that his last blog post would be his last blog post.
Seems odd that his blog would be left so barren. It’s not like Arenas was really busy with anything since May 2. Maybe that series with the Cavs sapped all his typing energy.
The least he could do is post a few photos of the Great Wall of China & the Eiffel Tower when he comes back.
