Georgia Blows Through Two SEC Games Saturday

The latest cliché in sports could very well be “tornado-proof.”

After being left for dead on an Atlanta roadside, Georgia kept their season alive last night, winning their SEC semi-final game against Mississippi State, 64-60, only hours after upsetting Kentucky in overtime earlier that afternoon.

The Kentucky game was postponed from Friday after a tornado ripped through downtown Atlanta and the SEC tournament was moved from the Georgia Dome to nearby Georgia Tech’s home floor at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

Even after playing his second tournament game, as one of only eight scholarship players, Georgia senior Sundiata Gaines‘ grasp of the obvious remained intact.

“To win two games in one day at the SEC tournament is not easy,” said Gaines, who held an ice bag on his sore right hip but insisted “I’m not tired.”

ESPN.COM tells us that Georgia’s Billy Humphrey, who played a combined 73 minutes Saturday, made the difference against the Tigers.

Mississippi State led 60-59 with 1:37 left but couldn’t score again. Billy Humphrey, who scored all six of his points in the final 2 minutes, made two free throws for a 63-60 lead with 7.6 seconds left following Rhodes’ technical foul.

Humphrey, who averages 12.4 points per game, scored his first basket on a drive with 1:54 left for a 59-58 lead. After a basket by Rhodes, Humphrey’s jumper with 1:20 left gave Georgia a 61-60 lead.

Humphrey missed a free throw with 47 seconds left, but Georgia retained possession when Mississippi State knocked the rebound out of bounds. Butler couldn’t inbound the ball and was called for a five-second violation before he could call a timeout.

The Dawgs will play for the SEC title and an automatic berth to the NCAAs today at 3:30 against Arkansas, who upset No. 4 ranked Tennessee yesterday, 92-91.
