Penn student newspaper the DAILY PENNSYLVANIAN reports that the school’s athletic department has banned Gary Glitter’s “‘Rock and Roll Part 2′” from being played by the school’s basketball pep band at games. When the band would play the song at games, they would also cheer “Hey, you suck!” at the opposing bench.
Coincidentally, when we think of banning something Gary Glitter-related, sucking also coming to mind for us. Albeit in a different context.
Glitter of course is a noted purveyor of child pornography.
Associate director of Athletics Mary DiStanislao, in a somewhat creepy coincidence, noted to the D-P: “The Athletic Department has received many complaints, including from “more recent grads who are now bringing their own young children to games.”
Yes, it’s probably not a good idea to introduce any young children to something attributed Gary Glitter.
Despite the ban, DiStanislao also emailed the pep band that “we won’t stop it if we’re at home inside a minute and up by 20. But we have received complaints about it and basically, even if it weren’t offensive, it doesn’t make sense for the band to start a refrain like that at the last media time-out with 3+ minutes to go.”
So is it OK or isn’t it?
