As anyone who’s seen Necessary Roughness knows, every now and then you have to get your guys riled up with a good old fashioned knock ‘em, sock ‘em bar fight with the locals. But if you’re a South Carolina Gamecock and are trying to pump yourself up after a horrible upset last week at the hands of Vanderbilt, a food fight in the lunchroom will have to suffice.
Five players, none of whom play much, were involved in an on-campus “brawl” with a few non-USC students at the Grand Market Place food court in the Student Union yesterday. No charges are expected to be pressed.
THE STATE.COM has the details:
Each of the football players named in the incident report was listed as a victim in the civil disturbance: receiver C.C. Whitlock, offensive lineman Terrence Campbell, defensive lineman Melvin Ingram and defensive backs Akeem Auguste and Antonio Allen.
The report lists the suspects as unknown, although university spokesman Russ McKinney said the other combatants do not go to USC.
“It appears that individuals who are definitely non-USC students entered the Russell House and the altercation ensued,” McKinney said.
Asked about any possible punishment for the players, Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said he would let USC’s police and administration handle the situation.
No word yet on if this was a pre-meditated attack by these non-USC hoodlums, or just some overall anger in the cauldron of hate that is the lunch room. The guess here is that it was the latter.
If you’ve ever had to deal with a college food court, you know that soon enough, once someone doesn’t get the tray they want, or the last chicken leg is gone, tempers start to flare and soon enough you’re throwing sporks and ducking potatoes. Let’s see if this energy boils onto the field.
