Action started at Roland Garros yesterday, as the men and women both started their latest quests for another opportunity at a Grand Slam title.
Among winners in first-round action was Ana Ivanovic, who won in straight sets.
Second-ranked Ivanovic, a losing finalist in Paris last year and at the Australian Open this year, beat Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-2, 7-5, to open proceedings at an overcast center court at Roland Garros. She then blew kisses to the crowd.
“She gave me a tough match,” Ivanovic said at the post- match press conference. “I am happy with the victory, and it’s very nice to come back to Paris.”
For the men, David Nalbandian of Argentina and American James Blake also advanced.
