Fred Smoot’s Pro Bowling Ambitions To Be Tested

Fred Smoot is hoping to strike again. But have no fear, aquatic prostitutes of the Beltway, and get your mind out of the gutter. Then get it back in the gutter, because Smoot is planning to join the PBA.

Fred Smoot Bowling

The Washington DB rolled a 212 this week at a team bowling outing, and already seems to have his post-NFL career lined up. And in case this is just the usual bragging, the PBA has offered him an invitation to a tournament. Time to show what size balls he uses.

Dan Steinberg of the D.C. SPORTS BOG was on the case.

“I’m gonna attempt to go to the PBA,” Fred Smoot told me the other day. I started laughing.

“You’re laughing,” he observed. “See, people did this years ago when I said I was going to go to the NFL, so it don’t make me mad. I’m serious. I’m dead serious. I want to cross over to bowling after football.”

The thing is, he sounded really serious. I asked him around 16 times if he was joking, and every time he said he was not.

Smoot says his high is a 291, has his own bowling uniform, and is dead set on this. His Redskins teammates aren’t so sure.

“He’s serious, but he’s not serious,” fellow cornerback and bowling partner Carlos Rogers said. I asked Rogers whether Smoot could really do this; “hell no,” he said. “They would kill Smoot.”

But the PBA was listening, and it looks like Smoot is going to get his chance to show off his skills. Says Deputy Commissioner Tom Clark:

The PBA will give Fred Smoot entry into a PBA event and he can see where he stacks up against the best bowlers in the world. We think he might be in for a rude awakening because our pros are to bowling pins what he is to wide receivers.

Smoot would learn a lot about his game and get some tips from the best. We are sure he has a long way to go to get to the pro level but his enthusiasm for the sport can carry him far.

This NEEDS to happen, for the good of comedy.
