• FORMER WISCONSIN LINEMAN KICKS ASS IN IRAQ: Lion in Oil has an interview with Jake Wood, who is a Marine stationed in Iraq and also happens to be a former Univ. of Wisconsin football player. In reading Wood’s comments, who also has a blog, two words come to mind: Bad. Ass.
Wood: “As graduation started to draw closer and I was attending career fairs, I realized that I wasn’t interested in wearing a suit and tie in the corporate world. I also realized that 40 years from now I would regret not having done it when my country needed me the most.
“We are at war, and the people fighting it need leaders, it was a role that I saw myself as capable of filling. That being said, once I decided I wanted to join, the decision of which branch was easy. I wanted to be the best, so I joined the Marines. It was the same logic behind my choice to go to Wisconsin, don’t do anything half-assed.”
• BIG (FELINE) STRAHAN’S GHOST-WRITTEN GARBAGE: And then there’s the opposite of Jake Wood, Michael Strahan, who just had an absurd excerpt released from his throwaway autobiography: “Let’s say one day I came to you and offered you a million dollars to let me take a huge hunting knife and wear down the blade until it was rusty and really dull. Then, when it’s really dull and nasty, I would stick it into a pit of burning coals until the blade was white-hot.
“Finally, I would pull that sucker out of the flames and stab you over and over and over again. Take that blade and stab you in the ankles, your feet and your wrists. Not just stick it in but turn that rusty old knife and twist it when it’s sunk deep into your knees or shoulders… That is the reality of my NFL.”
Those words bring to mind a certain character in The Sopranos.
• BLACK PRO GOLFER OUTS TIGER’S INEFFECTIVENESS: Black Nationwide Golf Tour player Tim O’Neal has the temerity to tell the truth on Fox Sports Radio this week - that Tiger Woods has had zero effect on minorities playing golf:
“There aren’t any African-American kids right now that are in college that are playing Division I golf.”
• In a TV WEEK guest commentary this week, Mark Cuban lamented the firing of Don Imus, writing the sacking was a “tombstone for independent thinking in mainstream media. … Anyone who thinks the decision to cut the Imus show was purely a decision by NBC Universal is kidding themselves.
“GE is one of the largest companies in the world, and to say it takes pride in being squeaky clean would be putting it mildly. If the Imus show was on HDNet, would I have fired him? Hell, no. I would have expected him to apologize, but he would have kept his job.”
• The BOSTON GLOBE reports MLB teams like the Royals and Rangers are taking financial advantage of the local appearances of Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka by jacking up ad rates of home plate ad signs on the days he pitches in their ballparks. The clubs have “sold ad space worth hundreds of thousands of dollars inside their own stadiums.“
