Football Star Racks Up Offers, Criminal Charges

Remember Tebucky Jones? Of course you do; everybody remembers their first Tebucky. For the youngins, though, Jones played in the NFL for several seasons at safety, even winning a Super Bowl with the Patriots back in 2001.

Tebucky Jones Jr
(He’s a wide receiver? I thought guys only played receiver if they didn’t like to hit.)

These days, Jones is an assistant football coach at New Britain High School in Connecticut, where he attended high school. One of the players on that team is one Tebucky Jones, Jr., and surprise of surprises, they’re related. Like his father, Jones is a terrific athlete and gaining considerable attention from some D-I colleges, like UConn. One tiny problem, however, would be the holy smoking assload of charges Jones faces for a fight at school from May.

As the HARTFORD COURANT reports, Jones the Younger and a few of his friends took out some frustrations on a classmate, and the local police are supremely unamused:

Jones got into a fight with a fellow student at New Britain High, according to the New Britain Police Department. At the time, the student did not want to press charges but the school did and he was charged with disorderly conduct.

Well, as charges go, disorderly conduct is pretty light and enough of a catch-all that it can be explained away with a halfway competent excuse. Crisis averted… momentarily.

One week later, the student decided to go ahead and press charges. He gave a statement to the NBPD, alleging that Jones fought him, got on top of him, and choked him out. The police listened and took notes, then dropped a 20-ton anvil of punishment on Jones’ head:

The case file, which says Jones was born in 1992, lists six charges: second-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, first-degree unlawful restraint, second–degree reckless endangerment, second-degree conspiracy to commit assault and second-degree breach of peace.

Six! Six charges for fighting! Ah, ah, ah! For pure entertainment’s sake, it’s a shame that Jones isn’t in college yet; there’s no telling what the Fulmer Cup would end up awarding for such a superlative amount of criminal charges. From a “concern for Jones’ future” standpoint, though, this cannot be good.

Jones the Elder quickly came to his son’s aid when the paper asked for comment, as you might expect:

“I know my son,” Tebucky Jones Sr. said by phone Thursday. “This is not an accurate portrayal of the kind of person he is. We’ll see what happens in court.”

But perhaps Jones might not want to inject himself into a conversation about reckless and violent behavior toward others; it was just 11 months ago that he himself was on the wrong side of criminal accusations:

Tebucky Jones […] was arrested at 1 a.m. Friday and charged with breach of peace, assault, and 4th degree sexual assault, according to a police report.

According to the police report, Jones had “inappropriate contact” with a woman in the casino hotel lobby early Friday, then got into a verbal exchange with her boyfriend, Nikolaos Papathanasiou, of 5 Rainbow Court in Quaker Hill.

The exchange escalated “when the accused knocked over the female victim and punched Papathanasiou in the face, causing multiple injuries,” the police report said.

Like father, like son? Nah. Give Junior a little credit here; choking someone is taking things to a whole new level.
