As the NFL Combine gets into full swing, practices are also starting up for some indoor football squads. And one female sports reporter is getting an in-depth look of the lesser-known leagues - by suiting up with a team.
The COLUMBUS (GA) LEDGER-ENQUIRER has the story on Rachel Baribeau, a reporter for local radio station WEAM 1580, who’s been banging with the big boys out on the practice field.
Rachel even has a website chronicling her adventures with the Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association. Even though the drills have been non-contact, she’s had her share of bumps & bruises:
“They haven’t been afraid to hit me. They’ve knocked me down, obviously a little bit less than they would (another player).”
But Baribeau denies that her involvement is just some cheap radio station stunt. And Lions coach Jason Gibson believes her:
“She addressed (the players) and let them know that she is a hard worker and that she just desires to be the best in broadcasting, just like they want to be the best in football. She wanted them to understand that this is not a joke and not a gimmick. She’s trying to understand the game better.”
Baribeau is hoping to someday roam the sidelines for a national network, a la Erin Andrews. After that, who knows? Maybe a gig with “Monday Night Football”. (They do have some openings.) Or maybe a starring role in a film produced by your ex-pitcher husband.
