Last night was a landmark evening for the female soccer referee community in Germany as Bibiana Steinhaus became the first woman to officiate a second-division Bundesliga match on German national television.
(Delightful translation from Germany’s national daily BILD)
She also became the first woman to officiate a second-division Bundesliga match on German national television who had her breast touched by a player during the game - accidentally. (We think.)
Hertha Berlin and Alemania Aachen were the teams involved:
Early in the second half, Hertha midfield Peter Niemeyer can be seen apparently trying to pat Steinhaus on the shoulder or back while not taking his eyes of the ball in play.
Niemeyer whiffed completely on his first attempt. On his second try, he again missed Steinhaus’s shoulder and ended up grazing her left breast with his right hand.
A bewildered Steinhaus wasn’t sure what had happened right away, but later smiled at Niemeyer in an apparent signal that she knew he only had the
breast best of intentions.
Best part of the video is the laughter coming from the German commentators - which I don’t think was inappropriate considering what looked to be an accident and Steinhaus’s reaction.
