With Brett Favre Broadway-bound, TV stations in Wisconsin are being asked to adjust their NFL programming schedules.
Bruce Ciskie of AOL FANHOUSE flips through the dial & discovers that football viewers in America’s Dairyland have a sudden urge to watch Jets games this season.
Only two Jets games are scheduled to be broadcast nationally this year - the Week 3 game at San Diego will be on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, while the Week 11 game at New England will be the Thursday night NFL Network contest (expect attendance at sports bars in the Badger State to skyrocket that evening).
Even though the Packers rule the NFL airwaves in Wisconsin, Ciskie believes many Green Bay backers will still want to see how their boy Brett does this season in a different green uniform. So Bruce chatted up with the state’s CBS affiliates (the network that carries most AFC contests) to see if they fancy more Favre on their football schedules:
The station in Milwaukee has already said they will ask CBS to carry as many Jets games as possible. The network is likely to grant such a request, given that the reason (Brett Favre plays there now) is a pretty solid one …
In Green Bay, the CBS station is WFRV. I couldn’t reach the station manager for comment, but it sounds as if they’re at least going to make the call to CBS.
In Madison, a representative from WISC-TV is operating under the assumption that they’re going to ask for some changes in their CBS coverage schedule, even though it’s already been posted on their website.
Ciskie also quizzed Dave Jensch, station manager for KDLH-TV in Duluth, Minnesota, which also serves northwest Wisconsin:
Jensch told me he plans to contact CBS and request that they be given as many Jets games as possible. He told me the networks prefer that affiliates have a reason for requesting specific games be beamed to their market. Jensch added that his assumption would be that the Favre factor would be enough for his station, even though it’s based in Minnesota.
But not every station was so responsive to Ciskie’s questioning:
Calls to the affiliate in La Crosse, which also serves Eau Claire, went unanswered. Given the trend, however, I think it’s a safe bet that they’ll be looking for some Jets games.
Or Favre fans in La Crosse viewers can always head down to the Rivoli theater & watch Brett’s new team there.

There should be no conflict because Pack fans can watch the home team on FOX and the Jets on CBS. Still, are these Packers fans or Favre fans? As a Broncos fan, I know about having a legend retire as well as anybody. We all felt strong ties to John Elway, but we didn’t fawn over ourselves like Packers fans. When I was 16 (being born in 1982), Elway was the only signal-caller I’d ever known in orange and blue, so it was sad to see him go. Nevertheless, we’ve moved on (which Packers fan must do) and will embrace Jay Cutler. If fans are so smart and knowledgeable, then why don’t they work in the front office? If Wisconsinans are really Packers fans, they should accept the ruling that Thompson, Murphy, and McCarthy have made and cheer for their team.
