We’re happy we’re not the only people perplexed by the Atlanta Falcons. We all know about the organization getting jilted by Bill Parcells and bailed on by Bobby Petrino, and most of us had sympathy for owner Arthur Blank, especially in the wake of the Michael Vick nightmare.

But here we are in the new year and the Falcons still don’t have a new coach or, more importantly, someone running the overall football operation. Rich McKay was removed from that post weeks ago, and now has been offered the job of team president (with a raise). But McKay will no longer have final say in football decisions.
While that’s rather curious, Mike Florio of PRO FOOTBALL TALK (our favorite site without permalinks) has even stranger news about how the Falcons are going about finding a GM.
Blank is apparently “taking nine persons to the interviews of G.M. and head-coaching candidates“. So does that mean the coach and/or GM will have NINE bosses in the organization?
Even better is “talk that the Falcons are requiring the interviewees to take I.Q. tests. Though it arguably makes sense for front-office employees to be treated no differently than players, all of whom take the Wonderlic test, folks who have been working in the football industry in other towns presumably have sufficient smarts to continue to do so in Atlanta.“
So with that in mind, it’s not surprising the Falcons have now gone nearly a month without a coach or GM. Maybe they should consider interviewing Vince Young, since apparently he’d score better on the IQ test than previous candidates.
We’ve hearted Arthur Blank for some time now, but after seeing his modus operandi in the past couple months, we’re starting to understand why the franchise is in such a decrepit state.
