Barack Obama with an embarrassing gaffe in an interview on MLB Network last night. While chatting with Bob Costas, Obama clearly calls the White Sox’s former longtime home field “Cominskey Park”. It was no slip of the tongue.
(So-called Sox fan calls it “Cominskey” Park. Awkward.)
Obama has long claimed loyalty to the White Sox thanks to spending a good deal of his political and professional life on the south side of Chicago.
Video after the jump.
Obama says it at the :30 mark.
Amusing to hear Costas give a loud and clear “Comiskey” later in the conversation, as almost a signal to the President. I’d give Obama a pass on that if he hadn’t claimed for so long to be devoted Chisox fan. You don’t make that kind of colossal mistake if that’s the case.

come on. you’re just joking about this right? BFD
2:10 pm on July 15th, 2009
Loved his baggy hip-hopper jeans.
2:12 pm on July 15th, 2009
He’s an idiot.
2:13 pm on July 15th, 2009
Frank, you obviously either:
A) Don’t understand what it is to be a loyal fan of a team
B) Refuse to allow any criticism of people on your political “team”.
Or both.
Keep in mind that I’ve been savaged on this site multiple times recently for supposedly being a “California Liberal”.
Obama clearly botches Comiskey Park. A park the White Sox called home for a century. It’s not a small mistake for someone who claims to be devoted to the White Sox. Embarrassing.
2:15 pm on July 15th, 2009
So embarrassing that Costas later blurts out “COMISKEY” in what sounded like a veiled attempt to clue Obama in.
Commenters: Do me a favor and lay off the poltical agenda-driven comments in this thread.
2:16 pm on July 15th, 2009
I can still remember the day my day took me to my first Cubs game at Wringley Stadium.
2:16 pm on July 15th, 2009
Err, my dad. I give up.
2:20 pm on July 15th, 2009
BTW, am I the only person who noticed what Obama said at the very beginning of his segment in the broadcast booth with Buck and McCarver. I believe it was something like:
Buck: …President Obama in the broadcast booth. What an honor it is.
Obama: Something like: Yes it is quite an honor.
Freudian slip anyone? It was probably a slip of the tongue, but it does seem that Obama can be quite nonchalant about what he says. Not too good without his teleprompter. Taken incorrectly, it could come off as being very arrogant. Especially to foreign officials who may not quite understand the slip in syntax.
2:25 pm on July 15th, 2009
What President doesn’t have a MONSTER ego? The fine art of it of course is to make the public think you don’t have one.
Obama normally seems to walk that line pretty effectively.
But if given a choice, I’d want my president to have some arrogance in him. Especially when it comes to repping the country abroad.
2:47 pm on July 15th, 2009
He probably meant it was an honor to be in the broadcast booth.
2:57 pm on July 15th, 2009
he’s full of crap…no teleprompter to tell him what to say..I live in boston and love fernway field
2:59 pm on July 15th, 2009
he calls it cominskey FIELD
3:00 pm on July 15th, 2009
Just because you have a monster ego doesn’t give you the right to flaunt it.
Regardless of whether you are president or pion or Joe Buck, all people deserve a basic level of respect.
And whether what he said was what he meant (there is a reason Freud characterized his slips as confirming one’s subconscious), I am starting to believe that Pres Obama should probably start sticking to the script.
3:01 pm on July 15th, 2009
Oh my god, he made a slip.
Get Bush back.
Sorry, don’t see the big deal. Fake I’ll tell you fake - 4 out to every 5 (bandwagon) Cowboy fans have no idea who Tom Landry is. That’s fake.
3:15 pm on July 15th, 2009
It wasn’t a slip. He didn’t know the name of the field where the Sox played for 100 years.
It’s no biggie, just stop acting like a diehard Sox fan, that’s all. Check yourself.
3:17 pm on July 15th, 2009
Or maybe he was just thinking about his last trip to KC for pizza: http://www.minskys.com/
4:07 pm on July 15th, 2009
I don’t think this proves he’s not a diehard white sox fan. I think more likely it means that in addition to not being born in the US, Barry can’t read either. That’s okay though because there’s nothing in the constituion that says you have to be able to read to be president.
4:08 pm on July 15th, 2009
whoops, I mean constitution. Maybe he’s just like me and he can’t spell/type
4:09 pm on July 15th, 2009
i’d rather him mis-pronounce the name of a stadium that doesn’t exist than the name of a foreign leader or a simple word like “nuclear.”
4:23 pm on July 15th, 2009
the teleprompter did it! He can’t read it correctly if it ain’t SPELLED correctly!
4:27 pm on July 15th, 2009
Henceforward, therefore, it shall be known as Cominskey Park; as the Obama speaketh, so shall it be….
4:33 pm on July 15th, 2009
you mean a foreign leader like when Barry messed up the Russian presidents name, that was bad
4:41 pm on July 15th, 2009
Yes NASCAR nation, , he’s not a citizen, he can’t read, he’s the anti-christ, he’s Muslim and he’s not a white sox fan.
we return to Fox News…
4:49 pm on July 15th, 2009
Wow… Urkel didn’t know where the ChiSox play… I’m shocked!!!
4:58 pm on July 15th, 2009
Don’t be a jerk Crosby, I already told you, B.O. is a white sox fan.
4:59 pm on July 15th, 2009
Plus you left out that he throws like a girl
5:10 pm on July 15th, 2009
Meh, Obama may have charisma and eloquence (especially with a teleprompter) but in the end, he’s just a typical politician. He has a reputation of being a sports fan and athlete … so why not milk it? It’s good for his public image, which is EXTREMELY important. Remember, this is the same guy who called the Penn State mascot the “Nittaly Lions” and bowled a 37. So he’s a fake sports fan. Big deal. Remember when good ol’ boy Ted Kennedy praised the achievements of “Mike McGwire … Sammy Soo-ser”? Morons, the whole lot of ‘em.
6:53 pm on July 15th, 2009
Mike, thakfully you were the last comment b/c you are dead on, bro.
When are you people gonna wake up? Right wing nut-jobs and liberal p***ies alike - all politicians are money grubbing fools who are interested in one thing: getting re-elected.
You all get so caught up in stupid hot button issues that you don’t see the real issues…damnit.
7:25 pm on July 15th, 2009
Yo, Brooks! I lived on the South Side for ten years and a White Sox diehard. Old-timers really do pronounce it “Cominskey.” So, you’re wrong to hammer him on that. That said, people still refer to it as a “park” not a “field.” But man, you’re really nitpicking at that point. I’ll just assume all the haters above are Cubs and Red Sox fans.
8:17 pm on July 15th, 2009
I agree’s with all you haters…throw the bum out (even though I’ve heard lots say Cominsky, maybe their liars when they say they’re fans) Bring back shrubya..him smart. I also agree that teleprompters are no good. Lets do away with them for ESPN, all the news, we know everyone here could give a classy, well thought out speech w/o the use of a teleprompter. Goats.
9:09 pm on July 15th, 2009
Most white sox fans say Cominsky as they butcher “Soldier’s Field” for the bears
9:17 pm on July 15th, 2009
The fact that he calls it “Cominskey” actually proves he’s a long time sox fan………………………..non-story
9:49 pm on July 15th, 2009
Actually, wish I’d thought of “the teleprompter did it!”
10:21 pm on July 15th, 2009
Obama’s a jackass.
11:24 pm on July 15th, 2009
“Those damn white folks and their goofy accents threw me off. Did I mention my white grandmother was a racist?”
Brooks, you should be offended by the ‘Cali Liberal’ line - you’re a Missouri Liberal - I decided.
And his first pitch wasn’t ‘good enough’ - Pujols almost yanked his arm out to keep it from bouncing short of home plate - and he got to warm up. Impeach the douchebag. Putin would make our bitch president tap in about 20 seconds if they went in the Octagon.
11:29 pm on July 15th, 2009
If a politician is actually into sports, that’s fine. And some of them actually are. But if you’re not and you only push that image for political purposes. That’s creepy and dishonest. I think it’s possible that old timers call it by the incorrect pronuciation though. Most of us will never know. (And he does throw like a girl.)
11:51 pm on July 15th, 2009
Embarassing……… maybe even a tiny bit revealing. But you people have overreacted.
12:20 am on July 16th, 2009
Cominsky Field… Comiskey Park… it’s best not to be too specific.
10:28 am on July 16th, 2009
Thank god foreign policy is not decided by UFC fights
11:12 am on July 16th, 2009
He might throw like a girl, but he can throw down on the b-ball court.
1:39 pm on July 16th, 2009
The guy is a faker through and through.
1:52 pm on July 16th, 2009
Just like everything else, HE’S LYING!!! “Cominsky Field”, my heavens, what’s next Illi-noise?
8:42 pm on July 16th, 2009
I lived in Chicago for almost 10 years. More than a few Chicagoans say “Cominskey.” There are people in Detroit who say “Fords.” It’s just a weird local thing.
9:24 pm on October 24th, 2011
so what?A lot of us still call it Comiskey, refusing to freely advertise us cell
