A former San Diego Chargers linebacker has settled with a suburban city over a shooting that forced him to forfeit his football career.
The SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE reports that Steve Foley reached an agreement in his $5.5 million lawsuit against the city of Coronado, CA, and off-duty police officer Aaron Mansker.
In September 2006, Mansker had followed Foley to his home, suspecting the then-Charger of driving drunk. When Foley got out of his car & it appeared that he was reaching into his waistband for a gun, Mansker shot him, hitting him in the back of his left knee and hip. However, it turned out that Foley was unarmed.
Foley did eventually plead guilty to a misdemeanor drunk driving charge & was slapped with five years probation, with the end result of Foley being tossed off the Chargers’ roster.
But Foley soon sued Mansker & the city, with his lawyers saying that their client “had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on medical expenses and lost millions in past and future earnings.”
However, on the day Foley was going to hit the stand to testify, his legal team secured a settlement agreement with the city, giving Steve 5.5 million reasons to feel a little better about the incident (minus attorneys’ fees, of course).
Maybe Foley can take some of his court earnings to buy some new dogs.
