Current Browns DT Shaun Smith made the revelation during a talk with the Central Maryland Browns Backers (apparently there is such a thing). Smith was with Cincinnati at the time of the Jan. 2006 playoff game against Pittsburgh, and says he saw the locker room rumble.
Unfortunately, the YouTube video of Smith’s speech is no longer available, but this is what PFT transcribed from Shaun:
“He swung on Marvin. . . . (Johnson) shattered the training room glass. . . . He swung on Marvin (and) hit Marvin in the eye. . . . Then he tried to swing on wide receivers coach Hue Jackson, who’s now in Baltimore.”
And we though it was bad when Ocho Cinco went loco during the Pro Bowl.
LBS adds in more from Shaun: “If you saw Marvin in the press conference after the game, you would’ve seen his left eye had something below it.”
This Bengals page has a video clip of Lewis’ post-game conference, so you can see for yourself (Real Player required). By viewing the footage, it does appear Marvin’s left eye is a little darker. Or that could just be the lighting in the media room.
Smith further says Lewis lacks discipline (from LBS):
“He doesn’t have control of the players. It’s hard when you let players get away with certain things and then it becomes a pattern for the next guy and the next guy.”
If in fact a player punches a coach, and he’s still on the roster two years later with no intentions of getting rid of him, then yeah, you can see some reasons for concern.
