EA Sports Will Not Change The Madden 09 Cover

While most people spent their morning trying to figure out what the Brett Favre trade to the Jets will mean for both teams, there are also quite a lot of people wondering about something far more important. You see, we’re only a few short days away from the release of EA Sports’ latest incarnation of the Madden football game. You may have heard about who EA has chosen to adorn the cover of this year’s version of the game, Brett Favre.

So when the Favre trade was announced this morning, it sent gamers with too much time on their hands into a tizzy. What are they going to do about the Madden cover!? Brett’s wearing a Packers uniform, but he’s a Jet now! Cats and dogs living together! Mass hysteria!

Well everybody can relax, because before the trade even went down EA Sports President Peter Moore already made it clear on his blog:

I just want to set the record straight – Madden NFL 09 will hit stores next Tuesday with Brett wearing his Packers green and gold, as we celebrate his legacy as one of the great QBs to ever play the game and someone’s who’s been with us from the early days of John Madden Football. But what’s most important is what’s in the game – and by the start of the season, we’ll have a roster patch that will ensure that, in the game, Brett is on whatever team he’s playing for this season.

Well thank goodness that’s finally settled, I was worried I wouldn’t get any sleep tonight because of it. Still, just because we know that Favre will be in a Packers uniform on the cover, it just leads to more questions. First and foremost: Who will the Madden Cover Curse effect this season?

Since Brett’s wearing a Packers jersey, does that mean the Packers will be affected by it, or is the curse solely with the player and on it’s way to New York with Brett? What if this trade puts an end to the curse, and starts a new trend in which Madden covers bring Super Bowl rings to those on them?

Whatever the case may be, just know that we here at SbB will be following it very closely. And by following it very closely I mean playing Madden 09 about seven hours a day once it comes out next week. We’re a dedicated bunch.

*UPDATE*: Although the boxes won’t change, EA Sports will offer a new Jets-clad Favre cover available for download.
