Mattingly to be Dodgers’ Hitting Coach Once Again

When Joe Torre accepted the Dodgers’ managerial job last November, Don Mattingly was expected to follow his former Yankees boss to Chavez Ravine as the team’s new hitting coach. However, Don backed out of the role in January, choosing to spend his time dealing with family matters and an impending divorce from a law-breaking wife.

But now it appears that Donnie Baseball is finally ready to retake the job.

Dylan Hernandez of the LOS ANGELES TIMES reports that the Blue Crew will be removing Mike Easler, who was chosen to replace Mattingly in the first place. The move is expected to take place during the All-Star break, with Don’s first game to be July 18 against Arizona.

Hernandez explains why the change was deemed necessary:

The Dodgers lead the National League in earned-run average but rank among the bottom five in runs, hits, home runs, walks, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

And they can’t expect Hiroki Kuroda to one-hit opponents every night.

Mattingly reportedly told Dodgers management that he’s ready to coach for the rest of the season - provided he doesn’t get re-married & re-divorced in the meantime. As for Easler, he’s expected to be “reassigned” within the organization - which can mean anything from Special Office Assistant to Upper Deck Peanut Vendor.
