Well its not like he willfully withheld information from his athletic department regarding possible NCAA violations. He didn’t allow his players to keep playing after being notified of their financial involvement with a potentially dangerous person. He certainly didn’t fail to clear the air at a press conference in December involving this situation.

I just don’t understand why he’s being punished. The moral high ground resides in Columbus.

I’m so glad he was able to meet with players today to discuss adversity and the need to stand together. I know that defending and protecting cheaters is a noble and just position with many lifelong lessons attached to it.

I love how they blacked out the “unidentified” individual name from the “to” and the body of the email, but forgot to black out the gigantic header. I wonder how many reporters are calling Doug Archie right about now?

Scam: The header at the top of the email is the name of the person that printed out the emails. Doug Archie is the Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Camps at OSU

Yeah Mick, you’re probably right. It seems like OSU leaked fake emails damming their coach immediately after saying they were standing by him.

That is more likely than an older football coach, who probably isn’t real computer savvy, not following your ideal email format.

    Poker…

The problem is he knew about the free tattoos, selling of rings, etc. back in April according to these e-mails. When the NCCA confronted Ohio State in december with the information they said it was the first time they had heard of it. That’s where the violation happened. Just because someone told you something that was “confidential” doesn’t mean they supersede the rules of your sport’s governing body.

Look at the Bruce Pearl situation… two high school juniors went to his house for a BBQ, which is a secondary violation because it’s perfectly fine for high school seniors to attend them. An assistant lied to the NCAA saying that it didn’t happen and Bruce lied to the NCAA when asked about it later to cover for his assistant. The NCAA has since devastated his career over a BBQ held at his house with no free tattoos or monetary compensation for championship rings/trophies.

I’d say that Tressel is in more trouble than you think. Is it necessary? No, but that’s the rule. He didn’t tell the NCAA about the violations when they happened and therefore lied to the NCAA in December.

“A very unforunate day for Tressel and Ohio State” ????

    Because they got caught?

Or because Tressel said “uh” about 37 times during the press confrence? I’m no polygraph administer, but when I tell the truth I dont need to stop every 8 seconds to remember the story that the $40,000-an-hour lawyer has drilled in my head for the last 17 hours.

How were those players allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl again?

The Cash Cow never has to pay the piper, and it will continue to be that way.

I’m sure that the NCAA will be so mad at Ohio St. that they will put Cleveland St. on probation.

You are all crazy. People don’t send emails and start every sentence with a bullet point. the “lawyer” can’t spell tattoo. How could someone really get these documents if they can’t even talk about them on tv? Do you really think Yahoo would get these documents unlawfully? They would get shut down. At OSU our name wouldnt come up as “Tressel, Jim” it would be “Jim Tressel” or tressel.3@osu.edu. And a lawyer would say “I have friends in law enforcement and the raided the house of …” if the investigation was over the names would be released. A lawyer would not leave a p.s.s.s. that’s stupid. Not even locations are named besides the guy who took the rings. The lawyer said “I like the world you live in” to Coach Tressel? Whoever the M!ch!g@n idiot who says this is part of history is a moron. Go get an education. And S. Ross, really CSU? What are you even talking about? THESE AREN’T REAL.

But, but, but, but… the SEC are the cheaters! They always cheat, pay players, etc….at least, according to the non-SEC masses on the interwebz.

I will be the first to admit the SEC has had (and still has) it’s share of NCAA troubles. But for some reason these Big 10 and Pac-10 fans (among others) continuously claim the SEC are cheaters and unethical, and their own programs and conferences “play fair”.

In the past couple of weeks Oregon and OSU have come under fire. Go back over the past year or two and you can add USC and Michigan to that list. That’s just a few off the top of my head.

O$U is a disgrace to the BIG10. Pryor has had access to a corvette since SR year in high school, courtesy of a Jeannette, PA businessman who, ironically, happens to be an O$U fan. Let’s match up the emails with this quote by Tressel from earlier today

Tressel said at a news conference in Columbus that he allowed two players who were mentioned in the April e-mail to play last season because he did not want to “interfere with a federal investigation.” The university said it learned of the investigation in December from the United States attorney.
AAAAAAAH Liar Liar Pants on Fire.

  30. Gravatarsomethingrottenincolumbus
    4:41 am on March 9th, 2011

It sounds to me that a shady defense attorney was conning Tressel into interfering in a federal investigation. He not only didn’t abide by NCAA rules and honor his contract he has also possibly broken the law by conspiring to obstruct a Federal investigation. None of this passes the smell test and now it appears that OSU has become involved in the cover up. Doesn’t anyone at that university have any integrity? Where are the regents? This sounds a lot like SMU in their blackest hour. The death penalty should not be off the table for the NCAA sanctions when the past infractions under Tressel’s time are combined with this latest fiasco.

Look at the 1st email in the “TO” line, ya see that? It says To: Tressel.3@osu.edu. Then, if you’re familiar with Outlook, the sender can save that email as a contact however he would like, whether it be Jim Tressel, Tressel, Jim, or cheating sweater vest. Once he did that the reply would then come back from the contact’s name, however he saved it, in this case it was Tressel, Jim.

If you step back from this (forget a minute any hate or love for OSU), and put yourself in Tressel’s shoes. I’d probably have done just what he did here. At least for me, on the surface it appears that Jim was concerned about some potential life-threatening event occurring with the involved players. Did he bring this (the emails) to the attention of the Feds while they were conducting their investigation? That’s what I’d like to know.

  39. GravatarKnightmese
    10:02 am on March 9th, 2011

    @Freekshow
It isn’t that simple to just pay the players. What about schools that can’t afford to do this? Does a player still get paid if he gets hurt? What about the 3rd stringers, do they get paid the same? If so the stars will think they are being underpaid and get outside cash anyway. What about the other sports? Do they get paid too? I’ll admit the current system isn’t great but just paying the players creates a lot more problems than it solves.

Did selling these items have even one small thing to do with anything related to any game or practice at OSU.
Did OSU beat Michigan …AGAIN… Because these guys sold their rings.
Are we going to start investigating Athletes for selling their use Text books with their names in them?

This is all Crap…. The NCAA needs to concentrate on the parents selling their kids to the highest bidder… The Athletes that are juicing to get ahead…. and the equipment being used to protect the Athletes when they play… Things that matter… Not this Crap… Get Over it and Move on… I think someone should start an Investigation of the NCAA and see what they are really up to and where their money comes from.

All he has to say is keep me informed and have a nice Easter. It’s obvious that he had contact with school Head of Compliance Doug Archie. I am an SEC fan, but I am a ture college football fan. For this to happen at any school is devistating to our youth. You don’t find out about your kids hanging out with a drug dealer and not tell the truth. Haha, I misspelled sell as swell. Probably just cause me and Pryor just bought a dime bag off Rife and I’m super baked.

Know what’s funny? USC was sanctioned because of their basketball and football program, because of their players Mayo and Bush. Mayo and Bush, sounds like a tasty combo to me! ROFLMAOCOPTER!!!

I am an Ohio State Buckeyes fan and have been my whole life. That being said, this situation is unfortunate and really nobody is talking about the most significant part of it all - Eddie Rife is a known and convicted drug trafficker and dealer. I am concerned about how and why the players even know this guy and why they think it is smart to have a relationship with him. I’m also concerned about the possibility of drugs being involved in this situation.

G-D that guy is the worst attorney in the world. Emailing a guy with a publicly accessible email account mere moments after speaking with a guy facing a federal drug dealing indictment? Tressel is a schmuck, but this dude should not be holding a bar license.

    This just in:
Word that a new shipment of Tressel’s 2011 vests arrive this week….heard the NCAA would like to hold some collateral if ya know what I mean. Because God FORBID him to coach a game without the vest. Problem solved now. lol

All you Buckeyes hater are morons. IF any thing I would send my kids to OSU because their well being is more important than the NCAA. Can’t beat them so laugh until next season when we when AGAIN.

OSU fans don’t realize that they fall in the repeat offender window. LOL For the clueless, it just doesn’t have to be for football! Cheaters

Always thought there was a maize mole at OSU when they were able to beat us so often before Tressel [passing the playbook?].

All this hoopla does not solve the problem of ’star’ student athletes. Everybody makes money off them–but not them. Yes, they get scholarships, but that requires maintaining grades. Study takes time. Maintaining their athletic abilities, which got them them the scholarship
takes time–little or no time to make pocket money. The NCAA needs to address the situation.

For the people who don’t see a problem with the players selling their stuff just look at it this way. Any scholl could just start giving their players expensive gifts such as TV’s, phones, computers etc. and then the players could go out and sell these items, turning them into cash! Presto, we are now paying our players…now do you get the picture….hello anyone out there! Wake up OSU fans!

Speaking only as a direct mail expert, it is OK to use multiple post scripts.

But it isn’t psss or pssss

    It is pps, ppps, etc.

It stands for Partial Postscript or partial partial post script and is sued all the time by hard-selling direct mail writers.

Any professional knows what you do. If someone brings you something that could potentially damage your employer but it is outside of your “focus”. You bring it to the attention of those whose job it is to handle the issue. You forward the email to your boss (Athletic Director), ur boss’ boss (University President) and the lawyers (compliance office). Tressel just covered it up to save his season. I hope the NCAA crushes tOSU over this.

O.S.U. has lost its credibility by allowing these players
to play in the bowl game. I have lost all respect for coach Tressel as he is no didderent then the other unethical
coaches and should resign or be FIRED!!!!!
