Austin Rivers, son of Celtics coach Doc Rivers, is quite the basketball standout of the Orlando area. So it should please many Gator fans in and around central Florida that the Winter Park product has announced his intentions to play for Billy Donovan’s squad.
But Austin will have to wait a few years before packing his alligator bags for Gainesville - he just finished his freshman year of high school.
The ORLANDO SENTINEL points out that Doc’s kid will be the youngest commitment Donovan has received during his 14 years as a college coach. The previous young’un was current Gator sophomore Nick Calathes, who committed to UF after his sophomore high school season.
But Billy still has a way to go if he wants to catch Kentucky’s Billy Gillispie on robbing the rebounding cradle.
Because of such an early commitment, Donovan will have to wait three more seasons to welcome Austin to campus, as the 15-year-old phenom will continue to hoop it up for the Wildcats. Although Austin has orally committed, he can’t officially sign up until November of his senior year.
That still gives other Sunshine State schools time to convince Rivers to wind his way to their programs instead. What do you say, Florida State? UCF? Stetson?
Even if his b-ball prowess somehow flounders, with a name like Austin Rivers, Doc’s boy can likely find a career in international espionage.
Oh, behave!
