DEADSPIN (via INDY CORNROWS) leaks out word of who may have secretly recorded one of Bobby Knight’s better-known locker room blow-ups: New Jersey Nets coach Lawrence Frank.
On the heels of tonight’s Indiana-Purdue game, the INDIANAPOLIS STAR looks back at the 1991 tirade of the ex-Hoosier coach spewing out profanities in classic Knight form (definitely NSFW). And one former IU player says the Nets’ minder was the one who probably taped it.
Todd Leary believes the recording had to be done by a team manager, since “No player would have had the guts to do something like that because if (Knight) ever found out, they’d be looking for a dead body somewhere.”
Frank happened to be a manager on that ‘90-’91 squad that received this particular tongue-lashing. And Leary says he wouldn’t put it past the future Nets coach to do this sort of thing:
“Lawrence Frank definitely could have done something like this. There was never a manager that was more full of (it) than he was. He would take us to fraternity parties on campus and just walk us all in — and it wasn’t even his fraternity. He was just as full of (it) as they came.”
The STAR says they couldn’t reach Lawrence for comment. But former player Eric Anderson suggests that whoever did the deed should be … um, frank about it and come forward:
“I wouldn’t know why anyone at this point wouldn’t step up and say ‘I did it.’ You’ve got nothing to lose now. And you might even get a little fame out of it. I mean, Knight’s gone. It’s not like he’s going to come after you with a rifle or something.”
Oh, we beg to differ.
