Did GM’s Verbal Tick Reveal Dolphins’ First Pick?

Having toweled off after detailing Bill Parcells’ training camp golf cart in the stifling South Florida humidity, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland met with the media today.

Jeff Ireland Sigmund Freud

When he was asked about Miami’s first selection in next week’s NFL draft, Ireland suffered a verbal slip that might’ve expose a significant sliver of the Fins’ intention for pick. (audio after the jump)

Audio from WAXY-AM and Jorge Sedano in Miami (comments start at 1:30 of audio).

Ireland: “I don’t want bad guys on my team. Of course I want guys that have great upside. This is the first pick in the draft. This guy’s going to be, you hope that he’s the … a pillar of your defense for a long time. …

The assembled media then began to chortle shortly after Ireland said “defense.”

Ireland: “What’d I say? … (I meant) pillar of your defense, your offense, your team.”

(more laughter)

Ireland: “It’s a Freudian slip.

Relatively amusing, and perhaps revealing. Might Ireland’s unintentional intimation indicate that Chris Long will be the club’s initial pick? That’d be too bad by us, as Long has already confirmed he’d wear his Dad’s #75 if he was drafted by the Raiders.

We might add that Ireland’s accident wasn’t nearly as fun as FSN reporter Christine Nubla’s slip of the tongue.

Or Gholston since they were negotiating with him too.

I’d take Long 10 out of 10 times over Gholston. Where was Gholson for Ohio State in big games?

    He’s a combine creation.
