Don’t want to go overboard with this, but there was an interesting exchange late Saturday night on Twitter between SI’s Peter King and Mark Cuban. It all started when King was asked on what cable channel the Saturday night UFL game was being aired. His response:
For context, Cuban happens to be the founder of HD Net, and had earlier Tweeted this:
Now most guys in Cuban’s shoes upon seeing King’s Tweet would probably either do nothing, or send King a private message to “familiarize” him with the network.
Not Cubes. He (seemingly) let King have it.
And it didn’t stop there.
King responded with back-to-back Tweets:

Okay, at that point, we’re all thinking that’s the end of it. But of course, we’re all not accounting for Cuban’s delightfully, oft-combative personality. Cubes fires back:

Okay, hopefully I got the order straight there. When it comes to instant messages, context and meaning can easily be miscontrued, so I don’t want to go off the deep end in making any judgements.
At first blush, King probably could’ve been a little more diplomatic talking about HD Net and Cuban probably overreacted with the ridiculous “is SI still in business?” quip.
Nevertheless, pretty damn fun following two titans of sports media seemingly going toe-to-toe for a moment there.
And based on the reaction of the Twitter community, I wasn’t the only one who noticed.
I also have messages into King and Cuban to clarify what the true tone of the conversation was.
UPDATE: Blogger Josh Illes picked up this not-so-subtle exchange between Cuban and Twitter account holder Ray Luna that unearths Cuban’s probable motivation in the provocation:

Wow. The same thing happened to Alexander Graham Bell back in the day. The story goes that Bell took a swing at Thomas Edison before a county fair in 1880 after Edison calmly commented to a colleague “The telephone? I’ve never heard of such a machine.”

I’d say it’s about 1000 times funnier than the highest paid comedian on earth, Jay Leno.
