Like many control freaks who are in the public eye, Mark Cuban often gets frustrated with bloggers. What’s he supposed to do when they put out scurrilous rumors about the Mavericks, or post unflattering images of him alongside discredited 1950s politicians? Mr. Cuban figures, as one would probably guess, that a blacklist would be a good thing.
And who to administer this list? Why ESPN of course. Cuban’s modest proposal is that the WWL should present a page of blogs and websites which they won’t use in their reporting. But wouldn’t such a list just give these sites the publicity that Cuban says they don’t deserve? He has an answer for that, too.
From Cuban’s BLOG MAVERICK:
Unfortunately, ESPN and local newspapers, radio and TV media have become the patsies of bloggers. If some random blogger reports that “he has heard that a trade of Joe for John is being discussed”, then the traditional media, as they have told me many times “is requested by their editor to run it down and see if its real”. Its almost like a sad joke. How do you make an ESPN reporter jump? Make up something and put it on your blog. Somewhere a bunch of sports bloggers are playing a drinking game. Chug if the other guys made up trade rumor makes the ESPN crawl. How to stop it? ESPN.com puts up a page of blacklisted blogs and websites who’s posts they wont comment on or report on in any way. It will create a short term surge of traffic for those sites, but then they will go away as the proprietors of the sites realize that being discredited is not a good thing.
Yes, blogs are often an unregulated wasteland: Just look at the grammar used in BLOG MAVERICK. “Who’s” instead of “whose,” misplaced punctuation — ESPN would never stand for that. I would also guess that ESPN has enough of its own battles to fight, and doesn’t need to be taking on any of Cuban’s. And of course Cuban would have a lot more credibility on this issue if half of the misinformation about the Mavericks wasn’t coming out of his own mouth.
I really wish the Mavericks would win an NBA title so that Cuban would stop nonsense like this. Have you no sense of decency sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?
