After a career that’s spanned 20 years, it’s hard for Craig Biggio to stay away from the diamond. So the ex-Astros great is coming back to baseball - as head coach for his son’s high school team.
(Craig leaps at the chance to become a high school head coach)
The HOUSTON CHRONICLE reports that Biggio is expected to be named head honcho for St. Thomas, a Houston-area private school where his oldest son Conor plays both baseball and football.
For Biggio, he won’t be stepping into an unfamiliar situation - and it’s not like he’s getting a bad team.
The St. Thomas Eagles are two-time state champions, clinching their second consecutive title earlier this month, as Biggio served as an assistant coach. He’ll now be taking over for Ken Schulte, who’s leaving to coach football at Brazosport High.
Although he’ll be offered a small stipend, Biggio doesn’t plan to accept any money from the school for his head coaching job - since he’ll still be earning steady pay as a special assistant to Astros GM Ed Wade. As Astros owner Drayton McLane explains:
“They asked him to be the coach for next year, and Craig is going to have two jobs — one with the Astros and one with St. Thomas, and the one with the Astros is going to pay him better. He’s going to have a lot of fun coaching St. Thomas. His heart is there, and he’ll make a real contribution.”
By turning down a paycheck, Biggo’s already contributed greatly to the school’s bank account.
