Court: Bitter Swedish Wrestler Should Be Mad

Remember that Swedish wrestler who dropped his bronze medal to the mat in disgust to protest what he thought was a blown call by the referee? What a jerk, right? Well, it turns out that he was right to be mad: YAHOO! SPORTS reports that Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has ruled that Ara Abrahamian should have been granted an immediate appeal by the sport’s governing body FILA. They did not rule on if he’s a jerk or not.

Abrahamian was upset that he had been deducted a point for a penalty incurred during the second round - one that hadn’t been enforced until after the round was over. The point was ultimately the difference in the match, and what kept him from wrestling for the gold medal.

Immediately after the match, Abrahamian tried to appeal, but his coach was denied a request for video review and FILA refused to consider a protest. Abrahamian initally protested to the CAS to get the match results overturned, but later said he just wanted the unfairness of the lack of an immediate appeals system to be noted. Mission accomplished, I guess, although none of the match results are being changed.

FILA apparently didn’t do themselves any favors by not showing up to the hearing, a fact that was noted multiple times in the final verdict . Appearing to be too big to make it to an appeal tends to get judges upset.

And you could also say that Abrahamian was a double winner this weekend. Not only did he win his appeal with the CAS, but that crazy Cuban taekwondo fighter kicking the ref ensured that he wouldn’t be remembered as the face of poor sportsmanship for the Beijing Olympics.
