And their baskeball team, with 20 losses, a losing record in the MEAC, and no notable wins, has just qualified for the NCAA tournament.

SPORTSNETWORK.COM (via FARK SPORTS) informs us that Coppin State did so by winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament by shocking No. 1 seed Morgan State last night, 62-60.

Despite the excitement that the NCAA tournament brings to the average sports fan, in many ways, it’s grossly unfair. Morgan State went 22-10 overall this year and swept Coppin State in the regular-season series. But because these schools decided that 30 games wasn’t enough to decide who their best team was, they put on some quickie tournament, and try to make a little money on the side.

Now, Coppin State is going to a certain first-round loss (probably in the play-in game on Tuesday), while the class of the MEAC will be lucky to secure a bid to the NIT. How much good is served when your league’s most-qualified team sits at home during the college game’s showcase event? March Madness, indeed.
