The COLUMBUS (GA) LEDGER-ENQUIRER ten-huts, as five college football coaches will be making a special trip to visit recruits - of the Armed Forces.
Georgia’s Mark Richt, Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville, Notre Dame’s Charlie Weis, Miami’s Randy Shannon, and Yale’s Jack Siedlecki will be meeting & greeting with troops stationed in the Middle East.
The trip is set to take place during the last week of May, with the final stop scheduled for Memorial Day, May 26. As part of their visits, the coaches also plan to work the sidelines for some flag football contests between the servicemen & servicewomen.
As Richt described the reason for the journey, “We love the soldiers and their willingness to sacrifice for our country. We want to support them not only in prayer, but also in person.”
(Since we couldn’t fit him in on top, Yale coach Jack Siedlecki gets a photo all to himself)
Sure, we could make some jab at Weis’ & Shannon’s recent football follies, or why a guy from Yale was asked along, but this is a very noble gesture from these gridiron generals. We salute these fab five, and hope they come back safely - and the same for the rest of the soldiers over there.
