Carolla Alone Can’t Fill Comedic Chasm In Our Soul

Dont laugh: One of the great comedic tragedies of our generation was the breakup of Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel.

We’re being serious now, how many iconic movies and TV shows would we all be quoting these days if the pair had stayed together. Unfortunately though after their breakout success as “Man Show” co-hosts, Kimmel strayed off to late night TV and Carolla is now doing a regionally-syndicated morning radio show.

So now the best we can do every couple months is to endure another poorly-written, big screen comedy featuring the likes of Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn (except for “Swingers”) and Owen Wilson. We’re of the firm belief that if the former Man Show duo had invested in each other, their productions would have outshined all of the forgettable aforementioned. You might think that’s a stretch. We don’t.

A solo Carolla has a movie out today called “The Hammer.” Sadly, it doesn’t feature the post-career rantings of Fred Williamson, which probably would’ve been more entertaining. Rather, the film appears to be a mildly amusing vehicle for Carolla. In other words, it might just break his wacky syndicated morning show into Fresno.

We might not be fair about our appraisal of the movie, since we’ve only seen the trailer (below). But unlike Carolla off-the-cuff, we didn’t see any many laugh-out-loud moments. For a trailer, that’s not a good sign. We’re guessing the production will probably be another example of a Carolla-led project that doesn’t quite have the steam to power mainstream success.

On the bright side, FOXSports.com’s Todd Behrendt has a hilarious interview with Carolla about the movie, and other random musings that we’re also guessing is much funnier than the film itself (again, we hope we’re wrong on that).

When positioned as a complementary, comedic counterpuncher, Carolla has the makings a ginormous star. As with Kimmel, or with Dr. Drew Pinsky on the late night, syndicated sex advice show Loveline, which was the funniest thing on radio throughout the ’90s. Sadly, Carolla’s current morning radio offering isn’t nearly as good. Partly because Carolla is out front, but also because the show is stained by Danny Bonaduce’s daily appearance (no longer on the show? god bless Jack Silver!).

We understand Carolla wants to be the man, but as primary host/star, he will never be the mainstream success that he could’ve been as Kimmel’s sidekick. Between a late night talkshow featuring the pair, and movie projects, the duo could’ve become icons. Alone, they’re lesser lights presiding over petty* fiefdoms.

* We know, they’re still doing damn well.
