Cancer Comeback Catches UConn Coach Calhoun

The HARTFORD COURANT reports that Jim Calhoun is once again fighting cancer. But the UConn coach still plans on heading the Huskies next year.

Jim Calhoun

Calhoun announced at news conference on Friday that he’s undergoing treatment for a recurrence of skin cancer, the same malady the coach had to face just a year ago.

A malignant lump was found on Calhoun’s upper right neck, and the coach underwent surgery on May 6 to remove it. Luckily, the surrounding tissue & lymph nodes around the lump were free of any cancer. But Calhoun will still have to through six weeks of radiation treatment.

This is this third time Jim has had to jostle with cancer. Last year, Calhoun was treated for a skin cancer occurrence on his cheek, while in January of 2003, he was treated for prostate cancer.

But cancer should know by now that the 66-year-old coach isn’t an easy guy to put down, and he plans to continue storming around Storrs:

“I want to coach basketball at UConn,” Calhoun said. “At this moment I love what I’m do and feel very, very comfortable in doing that.” His physician, Dr. Jeffrey Spiro, attended the news conference and said he believes the coach is now cancer free and the radiation is a precaution.

Jim Calhoun Incredible Hulk

But the docs better be careful with those gamma rays during Jim’s treatment - unless Hartford wants to play host to an Incredible Hulk.
