Can You Hear Me Now? Lowell Steals Fan’s Phone

A foul ball into the Fenway stands turned out to be the perfect distraction for Mike Lowell to swipe someone’s cell phone.

Mike Lowell steals fan's cell phone

WBZ-TV calls in news that the Red Sox third baseman made the phone grab during Monday night’s game against the Twins.

During the top of the ninth inning, Lowell gave chase to a foul ball that eventually landed several rows back along the third base line. With the crowd’s attention taken by the foul, Lowell noticed the phone sitting on the baseline wall - so he took it.

Mike explains his motivation for swiping the cell:

“The guy just left it on the counter, and I wanted to take it from him and see how long he would react. I was gonna put it in my pocket but he kept looking at the foul ball, so the joke really wasn’t that cool.”

So with no reaction imminent, Lowell put the phone back where he found it. However, if it wasn’t so late in the game, he says might have had a little more fun with it:

“I guess if we had more time, I’d, like, dial my number, and he’d get my number. Hey, man, I’m here to have fun.”

But Lowell would have had more fun if he came across the guy’s wallet instead:

“If it was his wallet I would have kept it in my pocket until the end of the game and then I would have given it back to him. I think that one would have been good.”

Either way, Lowell’s theft attempt was just another example of the Red Sox reaching out to the fans. Just like Manny Ramirez’s high five in the outfield.
