Jon Gruden will be grimacing on the Tampa Bay sideline no more, as the Buccaneers have fired their head coach of the past 7 seasons.
(“Memorieeeees…..”)
TAMPA BAY ONLINE also reports that GM Bruce Allen has also been made to walk the plank. Here’s the official word from the team’s official website, as presented in the usual official form letter format:
“We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise,” said Buccaneers Co-Chairman Joel Glazer in the announcement. “However after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward.”
They forgot to wish Jon & Bruce well in their future endeavors.
Was it really that long ago than Gruden brought the long-time sad-sack franchise it’s first Super Bowl title? Against his former NFL employer, no less?
Well, now the Bucs need to start looking for a coaching replacment. But they better hurry - Eric Mangini, Jim Schwartz & Josh McDaniels have already been snapped up. What about defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin? That’s right - he went to work for his son over on Rocky Top.
Whoever can they get? Maybe someone with some experience with the organization. Maybe someone who’s already achieved great success in the NFL. Maybe someone who recently became available.
Hmmm … we wonder.

Mike Shanahan is available, too.

This surprises me. Especially doing it so late after the end of the regular season.

About time the Bucs made the move….Gruden is probably the most over-rated coach in history. He has won a Super Bowl with Tony Dungy's players…and has not won a playoff game since the Super Bowl season…also the late-season collapses were a little too much to take
