To further complicate matters, ESPN reports that the same substance appeared on his hand during games against the Yankees and the A’s.

After the game, Jim Leyland said the umps asked Rogers to wash his hands, while Rogers said that he washed them without provocation upon noticing ‘a clump of dirt.’
John Kruk weighs in: “If the umpire said ‘Hey man, go wash your hands and come back out for the second inning,’ that’s like a telling a bank robber, ‘Hey, we got you but if you give the money back, we’ll let you come back in here and bank again.’”
