Brooks @ USC-OSU Game: My Ears? Still Ringing

I covered Ohio State home games in the late ’90s, including games when the Buckeyes were ranked #1. I never, ever experienced anything like Saturday night at Ohio Stadium as USC defeated the Buckeyes 18-15.  Hard to really describe unless you were there. Best I can say is my ears are ringing as I write this.

(Breaking: Bumper crop o’ Buckeyes today)

I had the Buckeyes winning 17-13, as I wasn’t counting on a spectacular performance by true freshman USC QB Matt Barkley. But that’s precisely what we got. Barkley’s stats from the game were immaterial. Plainly, what won the game was his poise in the face of as hostile an environment as I’ve ever seen/heard at any sporting event. And the 19-year-old never changed expression. Ballgame.

And hopefully these guys …

Spectacular? You must be kidding. Throwing for less than 50% is anything but spectacular. USC won because the offensive line and Joe McKnight decided in the 4th quarter that it was time to begin playing.

Right, just turned 19, never been in a real college game, takes team length of the field for win at Ohio State. No biggie.

Hey ET…if you had actually read the entire post you would have understood that brooks wasn’t raving about Barkley’s stats (*note* “immaterial”)…Regardless of when the OL decided to show up, the point is that Barkley put his nose the grinder and moved the team down the field…the point is that it takes poise and talent to stand there with 1K pounds of meathaed trying to kill you and march down the field…and Barkley showed that he has both…I’m with you brooks.
