And now, your Brett Favre un-retirement update: ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the ex-Packers QB has an “itch” to come back & may report to training camp later this month.
Mortensen reports that “sources close to the team and player” say that Favre has told Packers coach Mike McCarthy about his “potential desire” to be back on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field - especially with his family “tugging on him to play“.
Of course, we kind of figured this would happen all along.
But Favre’s agent James “Bus” Cook downplayed any chance of Brett showing up in Green Bay on July 28, saying, “As far as I know, right now, Brett Favre is retired and until he tells me something different, that’s what it is.”
And Brett’s return could hamper the development of current QB Aaron Rodgers, who’s gotten comfortable enough in his leadership role to tell Packers fans to “get on board or keep their mouths shut“.
If the Pack doesn’t want him back, there’s a chance that Favre could ask for a release from his contract (he’s still on the team’s reserve-retired list) and line up under center for some other NFL club.
It’s not like Joe Montana or Joe Namath haven’t done the same thing.
