SPEED TV reports this afternoon that “after 12 years of warring that cost open-wheel racing much of its sponsorship, audience and momentum, common sense has finally prevailed.
“Indy Racing League and Champ Car have officially, and mercifully, agreed to become one entity. A press conference could come as early as Wednesday.”
This is the biggest merger news since Sirius and XM decided to combine 2-3 years before the sat radio business model completely collapses (and it will, hello internet radio in the car!.
We do remember the days when open-wheel was embraced by more than triple figures outside of the Indy area code. Danica Patrick has kept IRL’s virtually lifeless body from expiring, but Champ Car was buried long ago in the minds of most North American sports fans.
Thanks Tony (George)!
