Boylan’s Bulls Babysitting Days Are Officially Over

The Chicago Bulls have fired interim head coach Jim Boylan, the least effective babysitter since Elisabeth Shue.

Adventures in Bulls Babysitting

His 24-32 record does not begin to describe how inadequate Boylan proved to be in the job. His attempts to curry favor with the veteran players in an effort to get them to play hard enough to secure a head coaching gig next season proved disastrous, as Judge Ben Wallace and other veterans set up a kangaroo court faster than you could say “washed up”.

Then Boylan lurched between what only a drunken astrophysicist (or Isiah Thomas) could favorably call ‘rotations’, stranding the young players that needed evaluation before season’s end at the end of the bench until it was far too late. After the fait was accompli, Boylan just let the boys run wild at the end, as can be seen in the 151-135 win in Milwaukee this week.

Players no longer felt the need to respect authority figures since none existed. Chris Duhon, Ben Wallace, Joakim Noah, Aaron Gray, and many others had individual and collective outbursts at coaches, players, and the media at various moments during the season.

John Paxson, Bulls GM, placed Boylan in an untenable position when he didn’t pull the trigger on various trades throughout last offseason and leaving him without a legitimate chance at a trade during the season that would matter. Still, it’s not like Boylan impressed in his limited chance at success.

(Again, we emphasize a trade that would matter. For example, Larry Hughes celebrated this news by firing off 20 three-pointers from his living room in the general direction of the Lake Forest, IL, practice center.)

Boylan will probably land safely. He did nothing to counter the teachings of Christmas firing Scott Skiles, who will likely accept Boylan back into his clique when Skiles gets his next job.

Paxson will now have an offseason to evaluate the entire misbegotten squad and front office to determine which pieces stay in place. All things considered, Paxson may want to consult with famed Chicago magician Wizzo to work on getting that second pick in the draft for Derrick Rose’s services.

Wizzo and Bozo

As Chicagoans can well attest, there’s enough doody-doody-doo around Lake Forest today to get the job done.

Boylan implemented new rotations every game or so. Duhon skips town for the Duke/NC game, stays out late to party, everyone knows it, yet Boylan plays him over guys like Thabo and Hinrich.
It was a frustrating year for Bulls fans.
