As if there weren’t enough wonderful reasons for Beijing to host this year’s Summer Olympics - like pollution, food scares, human rights abuses - SHANGHAIST adds another great item to the list: racist bar policies.
The SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST reports that some Beijing drinking establishments near the Olympic venues said that they were told by government officials not to serve any black customers - or Mongolians, for that matter:
Bar owners near the Workers’ Stadium in central Beijing say they have been forced by Public Security Bureau officials to sign pledges agreeing not to let black people enter their premises.
“Uniformed Public Security Bureau officers came into the bar recently and told me not to serve black people or Mongolians,” said the co-owner of a western-style bar, who asked not to be named.
Whoa. Wonder what Don Imus & Al Sharpton think about this.
But such racist behavior isn’t really that unexpected from the Chinese. Check out their favorite brand of toothpaste - formerly known as “Darkie“.
