Okie State KO’ed; Bill Keeping Self With Jayhawks

With all the recent defections in college basketball - the Lopez Twins, O.J. Mayo, Trent Johnson - at least one guy has decided to stay put.

Bill Self

(“Show me the security!”)

The KANSAS CITY STAR reports that Bill Self will remain at Kansas, putting end to speculation that the Jayhawks coach would soon be flying south to Stillwater to helm the Oklahoma State hoops program.

Self met with OSU AD Mike Holder on Wednesday night for a couple of hours, but decided in then end to decline a move to his alma mater.

The coach of the 2008 national champs ruffled some feathers on Wednesday when he said he wanted “security” from the Jayhawks via a new contract extenstion. With Thursday’s decision, it seemed he got what he wanted, although details of the new deal haven’t yet been released.

Then again, if you believe Bill, Jayhawkers had no reason to be concerned about Self’s possible sayonara:

“There was never serious interest on our part of leaving the University of Kansas,” said Self, who had three years left on a deal that paid him $1.375 million per year. “There was serious interest in listening (to Oklahoma State) and hopefully helping Oklahoma State University in a way that would put their basketball program in a position they want to be in. I came to the conclusion that I felt all along, that the time is right for my family to be in Lawrence, Kansas, and lead this program hopefully to bigger and better things in the future.”

Why didn’t you say that in the first place? Well, at least the KU kids can get back to partying.

In the meantime, the Cowboys will have to rustle up some new candidates for their coaching position. We hear Eddie Sutton might be available to come back. But he’ll need a ride.
