Bill Buckner Comes Back To Boston For First Pitch

Two World Series titles in four years is apparently enough to allow Bill Buckner to make a safe return to Boston.

Bill Buckner Red Sox first pitch

(Wonder what country this is taking place in?)

The scourge of the ‘86 Series against the Mets was on hand Tuesday to throw out the first pitch in the Red Sox’s home opener. It was reportedly the first time Buckner was back at Fenway since 1997, when he was a coach with the Chicago White Sox.

And how did the Sawx supporters react to Bill’s appearance?

(Video after the jump.)

With a standing ovation (and with very low audio):

You can see Buckner wipe away the tears as he sauntered from left field to the pitcher’s mound. (What up with all the weepy sports folks these days? Doesn’t he know there’s no crying in baseball?)

So, finally, after all these years, a sense of closure with the Boston faithful, right? Well, Bill says his scorn wasn’t totally with the Red Sox rooters:

“I really had to forgive, not the fans of Boston, per se, but in my heart, I had to forgive the media for what they put me and my family through. I’ve done that, and I’m over that and I’m just happy.”

At least he got a better reaction than the Nationals’ first pitch guest.
