Move over Rafael Palmeiro, you’re Congressional interview just got some serious company when it comes to lying about steroids. That’s because, with news leaking about Alex Rodriguez’s positive test for two types of banned steroids in past few hours, this interview with CBS anchor Katie Couric becomes awful striking.
That’s right, A-Rod just denied using steroids, over and over again. And he did it on public TV. And he did it with a television celebrity, just to make sure that we wouldn’t forget about it. Isn’t it great how egomania can come back to bite you in the ass sometimes?
A big hat tip goes to Pete over at DEADSPIN for digging out this clip. It’s hard to beat isn’t it?
How categorical was the denial? Here are the quotes:
“For the record, have you ever used steroids, human growth hormone or any other performance-enhancing substance?” Couric asked.
“No,” Rodriguez replied.
Asked if he had ever been tempted to use any of those things, Rodriguez told Couric, “No.”
“You never felt like, ‘This guy’s doing it, maybe I should look into this, too? He’s getting better numbers, playing better ball,’” Couric asked.
“I’ve never felt overmatched on the baseball field. I’ve always been a very strong, dominant position. And I felt that if I did my work as I’ve done since I was, you know, a rookie back in Seattle, I didn’t have a problem competing at any level. So, no,” he replied.
Now, we understand that A-Rod wasn’t on the stand in front of a grand jury, and he wasn’t exactly under oath, but he should still feel the full wrath of the American public on this. It’s not enough that he took performance enhancing drugs multiple times during the first year when he actually reached the stratospheric heights his career was pegged for. No, he also had to go and openly lie about it. Not fudge the facts, saying that he may not have known what was in some of his vitamins, etc. No, he had to guarantee he’d never done it.
Now we know he did, and it throws all of his achievements since into question. When did he stop? Did he just switch to human growth hormone?
Who knows. The only thing we can be sure of is that he’s a cheat. That’s now the prologue to all the records to come, whether he wants to admit it or not.
