In a far more savage age of football no one played more savagely than Jack Tatum. I grew up holding my breath when a pass went into the Oakland secondary because you never knew what you might see.The most intimidating force to ever play in the secondary, no doubt.

Jack Tatum was a grown ass man and a helluva football player? Asking him to apologize for the Stingley hit would be like asking Goose Gossage to apologize for beaning Ron Cey. Neither should. It was the way the game was played.. and Tatum played it hard and should be in the Hall..

Anyone who has played competitive sports and has any kind of intensity while doing so knows that there are occasions when the adrenaline and will to achieve can override the ability to stop immediately, just because a ref blows a whistle or a pass falls incomplete. There's not a hard-hitting player in the NFL that hasn't clocked someone after the whistle a few times, and it usually doesn't equate to maliciousness or intent to injure. I'm not taking sides, but I consider myself a "good sport" who tries my best to play by the rules, and I also know I play sports hard and that the line accidentally gets crossed once in awhile. If I hurt someone, I'm going to feel bad about it -- maybe even second-guess myself a bit -- but ultimately, I'll know I didn't INTEND to hurt an opponent. Hey, it can even happen between teammates when you step between the white lines and the game gets rockin.'

I'm old enough to remember when he played and for everyone posting bad stuff about this guy get a life. The game was different then there were no TO's or Ochostinko's because of guys like Jack Tatum. Its why Conrad Dobler needs two knees and Mike Webster was brain dead by 50, they played to the whistle and sometime past it.

Yes he pushed the limit on legality but so do did Deacon Jones. Deacon Jones would slap guys upide the head so hard that he would knock them out and he's revered. Read the book and tell me what a prick he is,this guy was no prick. He was haunted by the Stingley hit and couldn't shake it. Yes he could have apoligized but that would have admited he did something wrong and he didn't.

People just hated on him because he was a Raider and they were the rebels of day.

Tatum put the ass in assasin. The Stingley play an accident? Hardly. Tatum was lucky that that play was the only one that turned out the way it did. There were many more in his "career" that could have gone wrong. So he was a good dad and father...was kindhearted. People love Charles Manson as well, don't they?
