Art Finds Home for Sprinters, Disposable Cash

Congratulations to all the track and field athletes that made the U.S. Olympic team at the most demanding of all the U.S. Olympic trials; best of luck in Beijing. Still, we worry about the lives of America’s track and field athletes. Raising funds to train can be draining, not to mention the lack of post-career need for really fast people. (After all, Al Davis has to pass on eventually.)

Martin Creed and Work No. 850

Therefore, we’re glad to see the world’s abstract artists embracing the emerging environmental movement and recycling sprinters, just like London artist Martin Creed has done by having a sprinter bolt through an exhibit every 30 seconds, followed by a 30-second pause. That’s the whole exhibit.

Frankly, we think Mr. Creed’s missing an opportunity. When NBC shows the Kentucky Derby, they show two-three minutes of racing surrounded by three hours of nothing. Now that’s art we can get behind. (Note: we will get behind Mr. Creed’s art if he serves mint juleps at the exhibit and provides lawn chairs. Or if he hires Eddy Curry as the sprinter.)
