8/8/04 BURNING JAPANESE: In Bejing on Sunday, Japan defeated China 3-1 in soccer to claim the Asia Cup.
The reaction of the Chinese fans: "After the match angry fans burned Japanese flags outside the stadium while others chanted anti-Japanese slogans around Tiananmen Square, witnesses said. Japan’s embassy in Beijing was also "sealed off."
REUTERS reports "One banner, reflecting China’s desire to beat Japan, read ‘Take the blade to the devil’s head and put our head in its place. ‘A group of fans clustered round a ringleader who shouted ‘Kill the Japanese.’" Evidently the Chinese, who love to adopt elements of the American culture, have studied the Auburn-Alabama rivalry very closely.
