After weeks of haggling & holding out, rookie right tackle Andre Smith finally signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Before the holdout, Cincy had their sights on slotting Smith as a starter this season. Now with a 4-year-deal ironed out, it seemed that the final piece of the puzzle had finally fallen in place for the Bengals.
So, of course 48 hours later, Andre goes out and breaks his foot.
According to the official team release, Smith suffered a small fracture in his left foot during a non-contact drill in Tuesday’ practice, which was only his third workout with the Bengals.
Coach Marvin Lewis says surgery likely won’t be required on Andre’s injured foot, but it appears Smith will be sidelined for another few weeks. Looks like we have another Dusty Dvoracek on our hands.
Yes, it is all a bit embarrassing, but it’s not like Andre hurt himself stepping on a carpet on anything. Still, Andre’s absence from NFL-related activities is nothing new, whether it’s holding out during training camp, or going AWOL during scouting combines.
