Armed Robbery: How Did Auburn Miss The Signs?

10 days ago four Auburn football players committed armed robbery at an Alabama trailer park.

Auburn Football Players Gang Signs Daren Bates Onterio McCalebb Neiko Thorpe

From these photos - which were taken before the crime - it’s hard to believe that the Auburn coaching staff and athletic department somehow didn’t see the signs of what might happen.

Wait a minute

The four Auburn football players pictured above, Daren Bates, Onterrio McCalebb, Neiko Thorpe and Demetruce McNeal, weren’t actually involved in the robbery.

Auburn Family® indeed.

Gangs are now “all in” the family at Auburn. God is with them allright. Cheeznick needs to check the Bible and see what happens to those that use His name in vain. Not very good.

Glad to see it’s finally being exposed for what it is.

This program needs to be given the death penalty.

AU fans are the only fans in the nation who cannot admit the unbelievable amount of suspicious activity, BAD signs & distasteful behavior surrounding the program. And the God talk shud be quieted down merely for the sake of propriety & decorum. It’s like a rap star who sings about pimps, whores, guns, & money…thanking God for his success. Insulting to religious people. Clean up the image & them talk about God all you want.

This is weak stuff that only fuels Bammers and other haters. So, it seems that the McNeal’s gun is plastic. Do we know what the signs mean?

Seems like someone is stirring up anti-urban sentiment. Not all sign flashers run in gangs. Not all urban kids commit armed robbery.

Would I rather our players not identify with that culture? Probably so, but I’m not ready to make it a requirement.

Brooks should go interview Deron Furr, a former Auburn QB/safety. Furr was a Columbus, Ga. kid whose teammate committed to AU then went to FSU and started at WR. Furr was brought in under Tubbs. He enrolled early and during spring practice was jump on on the field in what looked like a gang beatdown. Furr quickly left Auburn & transferred to Memphis. Furr was a good student, from a two-parent home that didn’t fit the profile of what black athletes at Auburn are envisioned to be.

This has been a constant source of conflict for Auburn. They sale their school to Over-the-Mountain-kids as a “safe” school. Which translates to mean: White school. Black athletes create a problem with that image.During the Dye years, black players were encouraged to spend their weekends in Columbus or Tuskegee. In this regard, the white women were safe from the clutches of the black players. Times have changed on de planes.

They have had for several, Rev. Chette Williams to minister to the players, i.e. handle any problems, pass cash, etc.. With the arrival of Troopher Taylor, the leash on the players has been removed. Trooper sells a “fun” atmosphere to recruits. This translates into “do what you want” culture. He transformed UT in the same fashion. The UT team was divided, unsavory kids were brought in, and Troopher insulated himself within the team. OSU was headed down the same path but they had the sense to push him out the door.

These incidents will continue at Auburn as long as Gene Chizik is in charge(a figurehead if one was every created) & Trooper/Luper duo is buying players. “All In” at Auburn means: They will do Whatever is needed to compete. The Big Dogs hunt late is the AU motto. It translates into “We’ll find 6-8 kids with their hand out and fill it with cas; the Cam Newton model.

I hate auburn because they aren’t supposed to be good at football. Only Alabama is supposed to be good at football. I still have a empty pot in my stomach and lump in my throat when I think about Auburn came all the way back from 24-0 to win in our house against the greatest and cleanest football coach since bare Bryant. I cried for days. My wife left me for some Auburn fan and my dog won’t come to me anymore. Auburn must have cheated. There is no way that they could have beaten the might tide playing fairly. No punt intended. Ha! I think it’s great that journalists like sports by brook spend all their time putting together other peoples original thoughts and put it on one cite for my convenience. I don’t care if the info is true. Perception is reality. I hate auburn so much that I will believe anything bad about them because it must be true because everything about Auburn is evil except that my sister went there. But she didn’t live in a trailer. I think the pictures above are real and I believe that Bobby Lowdervabd Pat Dye probably took ylthe pictures. I think the hand gestures mean that they are all about to commit armed robbery. Not sure I get the point. You posted pictures of players that aren’t in trouble and haven’t been in trouble in order to try and say that Auburn should have seen the signs telling them that a completely different set of players would get in trouble? Doesn’t that about sum it up?

I’m just an old white guy, and I won’t pretend to say that I approve of these types of photos or “thug culture” in general in any way. But if you look, what you’re gonna find is that these types of photos and the trendy/popular “thug culture” they represent are very, very, very common at schools all across the nation. And it isn’t just black players either.

Where does this sort of thing come from? Popular (yes, popular) culture. Watch a few rap videos. Listen to some of the lyrics. Surely you already knew all of this anyway.

I guess from where I sit, your point is really no point at all. You can’t post pictures of kids that aren’t in trouble and use them to indicate that anyone should have seen trouble coming from a different group of kids. Get real.

It’s pretty easy. Suspend the players or kick them out if they are running around like thugs, toy guns or not. Find some pictures of current Bama players like these. 44. GravatarDr. Gerber
    11:23 am on March 20th, 2011

    To Jay Barker and others:

What Brooks points out is a culture that is reminiscent of Miami of the 1990s. Cash, stripper parties, players purchased, thuggery. It appears that the “family” atmosphere that Auburn promotes is a Blood/Crip-type family.

Who is running the show? Chizik or Troopher Taylor. It appears Troopher is working his magic much as he did in Tennessee. He brought in good talent from the Miami area but used street runners to locate and place the talent. The kids were problem kids, poor educational structure, poor family life, and streetwise. They arrived in Knoxville more committed to Troopher than Tennessee, and Taylor used that to try and force Fulmer’s hand into promoting him to Offensive Coordinator. Even Fulmer wasn’t that stupid. Troopher was eased out.

Troopher arrived in Stillman to rejuvenate OSU recruiting. The OSU Head Coach quickly realized that better talent was offset by having a cancer like Troppher around the team. His last year (and Luper’s) check and see how many kids he was in on recruiting. The answer is that OSU had shut him, and Luper, down before going to Auburn was ever on the horizon. OSU was glad to see the two-fool-circus leave town.

Is Auburn alone is the type of photos poasted? No. What makes them different is that they sell a family atmosphere based within a religious structure. In reality, they are selling a culture absent any real standards of behavior: The Inmates Run the Asylum.

The behavior of Eric Smith against Oregon, Nic Fairley’s repeated cheap shots against opponents, Pugh’s chop-block routine, Darrin Bates chepa shots, Zac Etheridge’s headhunter routine are all part of the on-field thuggery that is know as Auburn football.

Finally, since the first half of the decade when I was student at Auburn, gang culture has been whispered about as being injected into the football team. Coach Tubberville tried to irradiate it with little fanfare. However, Trooper, Chizik, and company has silently embraced it since they have seen a translation of violence off the field into violence, and winning, on the field. Cam Newton saga was the clean part of Auburn, there is much more dirt under the surface that makes Tressell, SMU, Miami, and Pol Pot seem nice by comparison.

You know what I say is true. I hate Auburn.
I want them to stop playing football so I never feel as bad as I did after Auburn humiliated Nick Saban and ruined his statue party.
I want so badly for bad things to be true about Auburn that I will believe anything I see or read. These photos are very clearly doctored but they are true because everybody knows Auburn loves thugs. It doesn’t matter that Jimmy Johns sold coke in the parking lot next to the athletic facility or that Courtney Upshaw beat up his girlfriend or that the other guy held up a girl at gunpoint. At least those guys don’t act like thugs like the Aubs do. I can’t wait for the players to go to jail and then tell everybody what cheaters auburn is. I hate Auburn. I don’t even use toilet paper anymore. Roll Damm Tide and long live Sports by Brook! 2nd only to Bleacher Report!

  47. GravatarDr. Gerber
    12:16 pm on March 20th, 2011

Jimmy John went to prison. Both Upshaw and the girl were arrested for the altercation. Elder was kicked off the team and is now at troy under Larry Blakeney. None can be justified, nor can home invasion. What leads to incredulity is that Auburn fans think there is a concerted effort by everyone to “get auburn.” Instead, Auburn wants to be a “Big Boy” school without the limelight.

Welcome to life under the microscope. Trying to do things the right way is difficult but using runners to buy players opens so many avenues of investigation. Unlike you HonestT, I had many of the players from the 2004 in class. Most were nice kids, some were decent students, many were functional illiterate. Roshard Gilyard comes to mind or Junior Rosegreen. However, the difference in 2000-08 and now is that Tubberville made efforts to control the image of his program. Yes he took chances but he also had coaches that tried to maintain some decorum.

Chizik is a figurehead and it is reflected in the actions of the Auburn team. Many players are loyal to Troopher, not Auburn. Gus runs the offense without any input from Chizik. The staff was hired for Chizik. The head coach lacks the authority to ride herd on the players. Only when something egregious occurs does action happen, action dictated by lawyers not the head coach. Auburn is a program out-of-control and incidents will continue to accumulate.

Instead, it’s more Auburn creeps doing what they do best, and Auburn fans being as apathetic as ever. Give me a break.

Explain how those are gang signs? Are any of you gang bangers? I’m guessing anytime any of you see a group of black guys you automaticaly consider them a gang.

I’m guessing most of you all moto is “All On”. As in “All On” Auburn dick ,get a life losers.

I think Georgia man’s just glad nobodys talkin about the red panties anymore. He’s right though. We don’t buy our players cars at Bama. Our kids all come from good families unlike the trash at auburn. Those guys down there don’t have Daddy’s, good men like Peaches who look out for their boys. Alabama doesn’t pay their players and never have. That whole Albert means thing was a setup because Fulmer was jealous of us. Auburn is going to get kicked out of the SEC and have to join the Sun Belt. I just hope they don’t bring in UAB because we are scared to play them. Roll Damm Tide.

The one on the left is potentially a stacked C sign, the Crips Cousins…

The second one could easily be him designating his status in whatever gang it is. When he receives something he holds his hand in this manner in order to show what his status is as the receiver. This sign either shows that he is a go-between or a liaison OR the Dai-Lo (I can’t tell if his fingers are bent back slightly or completely bent back)

The third one, well, he’s just throwing the “shocker” and if y’all don’t know what that means then you should get out more LOL

Ok, time for a little education my un-educated(On all things black) white bruthas. Neiko Thorpe is throwing up an “E” which stands for Eastside. It is not a freakin gang sign, it just represents what side of town you are from. The middle kid is shooting a bird, oh the fear that invokes. The other kid, who knows what he is throwin up. Point is, most of you on here have never stepped foot in a black community or know anything about what anything represents, so shut your piehole.

By the way I am a black male, college graduate working for a Fortune 500 company pulling in a 100K a year before my 30th bday. And I still rep the Eastside, but I aint a damn gang banger. You people are not racists, but just plain ignorant. Racism takes thought, and I can’t just give yall that much credit. # Truth Serum

RTFTiger. You on drugs? You in the AU cult? You must be. You are worried about spinning this story about Barron. Let me smarten you up. He hindered an investigation. THAT’S ALL! He got a $500 bond…compared to each AU player who got a $511,00 bond. ROFL! And you want to spin the attention from your ALL IN players to Barron. ROFLMAO! YOU ARE LAME and just like cult members who deny, smokescreen and spin from the truth/point.

Your FAMBLY is a cult who believes God won your championship. It was MONEY and greed paid out by your boosters/BOT to a BISHOP of (count’em with me) 6 churches who was SHOPPING his son. Six churches? I guess he needed them considering the nature of his sins. ROFL!

Your FAMBLY is a cult who’s ALL IN but you’ll find out what you were ALL IN for in due time. Then you’ll feel like fools for being so stupid to follow your “LEADERS”.

ROFL at the funniest thing about AU football. Two national championships and both with asterisks. One is about to be taken back.

Smile *U fans and, while you’re at it, go get some Pledge. That spot where the trophy once stood needs dusting. ROFLMAO!

ALL IN-carcerated. ALL IN a cult. WE ARE FAMBLY!!!

Can we get a tree hug? ROFL!

PHW - I was being generous, throwing the shocker doesn’t look as cool than it does when you split your fingers LOL

    # Truth Serum - As I stated in my earlier comment, those are “stacked gang signs” and while they may mean nothing because it could be just some kid trying to look “cool” someone somewhere thinks that means something. I’ve studied gangs, activity & lived in communities where they are very active…

The “shooting a bird” isn’t just a bird when you’ve got a stack of bills in your mouth.

ROFL at all sides of another Auburn piece perfectly placed by Brooks to draw hits and comments. Is Auburn squeaky clean? No. Is Auburn some kind of Gangland episode? No. If it’s waiting on the fall that keeps you guys holding on, find something else to hold on to. Oh and where are the comments about the Alabama commit in that link posted above?

    4:24 pm on March 22nd, 2011

Sure, I think Brooks is being a little sensational. But, there’s at least 75 responses to this so who can blame him?

Every school has their thugs and who knows what the circumstances were surrounding these pictures are? But, you have to take into consideration that more than just BAMA fans are questioning what’s going on down on the plains. Plus, it’s not just other SEC rivals, either. I agree with the previous posters who feel that the resurgence of BAMA has created a ‘win at all cost’ mentality at that school.

And there’s a typical response. Everyone does it so it must be ok. Again, it’s being reported AND read by so many b/c the barn won the championship. Plus the fact that the legitimacy of that championship is questioned by so many (not just Bama).

To start with, I am a life long Alabama fan. And I have to say that those pictures look altered to me. Especially the second one. I have no doubt that something nefarious is going on down on the planes. I also have no doubt it will come out.

    LMFAO :-) Good point.

Although I have been in a black community, I have not lived in one and do not have any deep insight into black youth culture. Being a middle aged white male that is.

But I still reserve the right, as we all should, to express my opinion. I have no insight into the Afghan culture either, but certainly have an opinion regarding the norms and values within that culture, as well as many others.

Persons less than 18 years of age for the purchase of a shotgun or rifle.
Persons less than 21 years of age for the purchase of a firearm that is other than a shotgun or rifle.
Having a pistol that looks like a gun plastic or real will get you shot, especially if you point it at a cop. The UT kids who robbed the gas station had a plastic gun if I recall. They also make plastic CO 2 guns that shoot pellets that will do some serious harm. They do not have a clip and look a lot like what he is holding.

Wow. Alabama fans must’ve made them do it!
I’m not ALL IN on the obvious attempts to discredit CheezWhiz, Troopa T, MalfoyZahn, or even good ole Poot Dye, who, in between drinking binges, STILL is teaching the Newbs how to cheat, bankrolled by the Spit of Auburn slush fund, Uncle Miltie, and Bobby “Louder” Lowder.
I guess when you’re in the courtroom, with accusations coming from ALL directions (even a great summary on Bobby Lowder and AU Cheating by an OHIO STATE fan - google “Bobby Lowder” and it makes Page 1), your only hope is to point the spotlight in one direction - your state rival - and hope everyone turns their heads that way. Ain’t working, Barn-people. No more than “everybody else is doing it” does.
Yeah I believe $cam’s ‘religious’ Daddy See-Sell offered his son to MSU for $180k, but decided to talk him into going to Aubrun for free. (He and ChWhiz must pray to the same god - a false one). As I recall from a Sports Illustrated writer, $cam was set on going to MSU before a 4-hour conversation with See-Sell “converted” him to the Church in the Barn. And as far as players with beaten-up girlfriends, the story about Lee Ziemba beating up his girlfriend was handled by Auburn attorneys, NOT the courts or newspapers. Quietly. In secret. The way things are always handled “down home” in the Lowliest Village.
Truth is, AU has SO MANY simultaneous investigations going on - excluding Uncle Miltie trying to buy senators like they wuz Aubrun football players - that the the NCAA needs a separate AU division just to deal with the volume of information. Street pimps in Texas, pimps in South Miami, money laundering via the Spit of Auburn, cellphones and ducats in Louisiana, unknown benefactors in Arkansas, adult performers ‘performing’ for recruits on ThePlains, enterprising players practicing their MadSkillz in a trailer park, etc. etc. etc. EVERYONE is noticing - Bama fans don’t need to contribute (except for mutually-recruited football players who switched back before they signed an AU letter of Intent-to-make-serious-money.)
Does Peaches stand shoulder to shoulder with See-Sell, or is he just a retort when people wonder out loud how (and how much) the money’s coming to See-Sell’s House of Worse-shi* in Georgia. Oh, sorry - it’s a god-thing. (To put God in the equation at Auburn is TRULY BLASPHEMY.)
Take the Blue (Blood’s) and Orange (jumpsuits) off your eyes, Barners, and pray for The Rapture before the NCAA administers AU Football’s Justly Earned Reward on earth…
(I say give the NCAA subpoena power, and this whole thing won’t drag on so long.)
